How do I get back into shape?
Question:
Age 22, 5’4″, 140lbs, back in high school I used to be extremely athletic, and even thought about Military (trained for it with recruiters, but changed my mind) I could jog miles straight without stopping, 50+ push ups… I’ve worked a few jobs, but for the past few years just been sitting on my ass playing games, I can’t even run to the end of the street now, what can I do to get back into shape? I think this might be the cause of my sleeping disorder too, I’m constantly sleepy, with or without the ability to actually fall asleep. What type of exercise should I be doing for muscle, cardio, and endurance?
Ah yes, a sport, forgot to mention I used to play Soccer, I’ve noticed my leg muscles have faded a little too. I get fatigued from sports quicker now, exhausted after only a few minutes.
Answer:
Have you actually be diagnosed with a sleeping disorder or are you just calling it that because you feel sleepy all the time?
What does your food intake consist of? If you have a high sugar and/or refined carb diet, that will most definitely give you that sluggish, sleepy feeling. Eat a diet (I’m not talking about “dieting”. I’m referring to the food you eat.) rich in vegetables, fruit and lean protein. No sodas. Drink plenty of water. If water get boring, squeeze a slice of lemon or lime in it or drink herbal tea. I love Celestial Seasonings herbal teas hot or iced.
Then get up and move. Don’t try to run, just walk. I was in your shoes not long ago. By cutting out the junk food and eating better and then walking 1 mile a day, I was able to lose about 2 lbs a week. I know that doesn’t sound like much, but it made a world of difference. If the weather was nice I’d walk another mile later on in the day. Soon the cellulite on my butt and thighs smoothed out and my legs had strength and tone. Then the clothes got looser. The more weight I lost, the better I felt physically AND mentally.
Resistance Training
Do some resistance training to challenge those muscles. Building new, lean muscle is the fastest and healthiest way to melt away fat, much faster than cardio. Right now Bodylastics is having a massive Black Friday sale going on. You can get a complete home gym system with 88 lbs of resistance for under $30. Other sets are available (up to 388 lbs) and if you have the extra cash, now’s the time to grab them. I’ve never seen them discount their systems like this before.
Free Resistance Training Workouts
They’ve got these amazing absolutely free workouts that you can do. I suggest watching the Chiseled workout for building muscle, but be sure to check out all the others. The workouts are not boring and there are new ones every day.
