How to loose weight WITHOUT the gym?

I tried a gym for the first time a few months ago but had to quit because it was too much money. I still don’t have any money to go to a gym. I really want to loose weight and gain some muscle but I don’t know how without the gym.I also have asthma and I tend to get breathless really quickly.How can I exercise without killing myself? What are some things I could do to loose weight and gain muscle?Should I exercise everyday? I would like to know how to work my arms out too without a gym. Since I’m loosing weight I want to make sure I don’t become flabby.

  • When you say “without going to the gym”, I hope it’s because of money and not because you’re too lazy to exercise.

    Keep in mind that you can’t out exercise a bad diet. If you’re taking in more calories than whatever activity you do is capable of burning, you’re not going to lose weight. So the first order of business is learning what to eat, must most importantly, why it should be eaten. You don’t just want to “feel full”, you must have nutritious food. I recommend either of two books. You can buy these used. I buy all of my books used.

    Cardio exercise will burn calories only while you’re performing it. Resistance training will continue to burn calories for up to 48 hrs later, depending upon the workout and intensity. Resistance training builds lean muscle (don’t worry, you won’t bulk up) and lean muscle can turn your body into a fat burning machine because muscle cells burns more calories than fat cells.

    Yes, you can lose weight by eating right, but to stay in shape and keep your body running efficiently, you really need to add some resistance training. Ideally, a personal trainer would be nice so you learn proper form, but luckily you can get one right on your computer. Click here for the free workouts.

    They have free live streaming workouts every day for men, women and teens. If you can’t watch one of the live workouts, they record all of them so check the archive. (These are NOT cheesy YouTube videos, either.) They are doable exercises because they use resistance bands that are adjustable. If you can’t perform the workout at the resistance level the instructor is using, then drop it down a notch by selecting lighter bands. Bands can give you a total body workout. A basic set of bands just like the ones they are using (up to 88# of resistance) is under $50. They’ve also got a set for up to 254# that’s still under $100.

    Even if you don’t have resistance bands, I highly suggest you watch the workouts anyway because you might discover that it’s something you’ll enjoy to do. Honestly, I don’t know why they don’t charge a membership fee for the workouts, but they don’t.

    The fastest way to lose weight is to build muscle. Each pound of lean muscle burns about 40-50 calories per day at a resting metabolic rate. 10 lbs of muscle will burn 400-500 calories. 20 lbs of muscle will burn 800-1000 calories. The fat will melt off and you’ll end up with a lean body.

    To build muscle you want to do high intensity resistance training. High intensity does not mean spending hours in a gym getting an intense workout and it doesn’t mean working out really hard so the sweat’s dripping down your face. It means doing roughly 8-10 reps with a level of resistance that challenges you enough so that it takes a significant amount of effort to complete that last rep. Then rest for about 30 seconds and move to the next muscle group. Workout out every major muscle group like this 3x times a week like Mon, Wed, Fri and then rest two days. You do not have to spend hours in a gym to effectively build muscle and you don’t even need weights.

    I highly recommend resistance bands. They are considerably cheaper than weights, not to mention portable. If you get the kind with the clips on the end, you can easily customize the resistance level as your body adapts. That will prevent you from plateauing and will keep your muscles challenged.

    Walking ( brisk ) and bicycling are two less strenuous forms of exercise that won’t cost much but your time. The results will take longer to achieve muscles in your legs and thighs only. These are considered "low impact" exercises. The weight loss is achieved by eating fewer calories than you burn off. Simple as that! The less impact exercises you do, the fewer calories you’ll burn off. Just giving up 500 calories each day, ( one 12 oz. can of regular soda ), will yield the loss of 1 pound per week. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Eat less fats and carbohydrates. Walk whenever you can during routine daily activities such as school or shopping. Walk to nearby stores instead of hopping in the vehicle for an errand. Ride your bicycle at least 6 miles or more. At 10 mph average, that will take about an hour. The arms will come slower. Use milk jugs filled half way up with water as weights. Start out doing some lifts with the milk jugs in front of you lifting straight up, and then with your arms to the sides and see if you can keep your arms straight when lifting out at your sides. Just place the jugs near your feet, reach down pick up the jugs and straighten up, then lift the jugs up to your chest for the front lift, and from your side, try just lifting the jugs straight out and up to shoulder height. Do five lifts to start and increase the reputations after a few days, and then you can increase the weight if you desire. If you sit in a chair while doing these exercises, you’ll take your leg muscles out of the equation. Also doing "push ups" will help. Hope this will help you get started. Good luck!
