Working Out Away From Home
How to Find a Gym on the Road
You have just checked into your hotel, and want to get in a workout before you head to dinner. Unfortunately, the place you are staying has no exercise room. If you are flexible and don’t mind checking out the area, you can probably find a gym or exercise center that will meet your needs. Local gyms often have a a special atmosphere that you won’t find in a hotel fitness center. You may find that local athletes hang out at the gym, giving you an option for learning about the area as well as exercise.
Gym operators have a wide range of possible fee options. If you find a facility run by a city or park department, you might get a free workout, or be charged a nominal fee. Other gyms may charge a lot for a single visit, even more than a monthly charge for a gym back home. Calling ahead to a local gym to ask about options is a good idea, they may be more willing to schedule you in by phone as opposed to a walk up arrangement. If you are a member of a chain exercise center at home, you may want to see if they have an exchange agreement with other centers in the same chain, or with other chains. This could give you another free workout if your fitness club has such an arrangement with other clubs.
A great place to start for checking out the local gym scene is the phone book in your hotel room. Open the yellow pages and look under “gymnasiums” or “health clubs”, you will probably find a good listing. The front desk at the hotel may also have a listing of local gyms and health clubs. There are also specialized business directories that list gyms and health clubs all over the country, giving locations as well as phone numbers.
It may be easy enough to find a gym or fitness center while on the road, but you need to have your workout routine in place as well. Know what your goals and abilities are for aerobics, weight training and overall fitness and flexibility. If your routine includes treadmill work, dumbbell exercises, and stationary bicycle exercise, you will be ready to take on these exercises in any gym that has that equipment.
Travellers on the road that want to exercise may have to work a little harder to get their workout done, but by checking out the local exercise or fitness clubs at your destination, you should be able to find a place that works for you. You will be able to stay fit no matter where you are!
